I teach voice—specifically, narrative approaches to ballads and topical songs—and Irish traditional music on the diatonic button accordion. I sing in a wide ranging style that I've pieced together from my mentors, Dónal Maguire, Louisa Jo Killen, and Lisa Null; my heroes, especially Thomas Moran and Jeannie Robertson; and members of my own family. I play the accordion in a style I gleaned from my mentors, Billy McComiskey and Derek Hickey.
Besides trying to bring traditional music to the public, much of my work revolves around reviving songs and instrumental music from manuscripts. Combined with an interest in history, this approach has led me to compile a repertoire of little known American topical songs from the 18th and 19th centuries. I've also nosed deeply into 19th century Irish collections such as Bunting, Petrie, and Joyce.
If any of this piques your interest, we'll be a good fit for each other!
