Join us online for a live-streamed event with some of today’s most prominent figures in the Irish cello world as we discuss the history of the Irish cello, the challenges of being accepted into the trad session scene, and where we see the future of cello in trad music going in Ireland and beyond.

This is a truly unprecedented gathering of cellists from around the world who have made a name for themselves performing cello in an Irish trad music setting – groundbreaking artists including, but not limited to, Rushad Eggleston, Neil Martin, Liz Davis Maxfield, Ilse DeZiah, Kevin Murphy, Alec Brown, Leah Rankin, Lioba Petrie, Kate Ellis and Mary Barnecutt.

Natalie is then joined by Irish duo Caitlín Nic Gabhann from Co. Meath (three time All-Ireland champion on concertina and former Riverdance member) and Ciarán Ó Maonaigh from Co. Donegal (grandson of Francie Mooney, member of Fidil, and former recipient of TG4 Young Musician of the Year) for half an hour of toe-tapping tunes featuring cello as an accompaniment to fiddle, concertina, and dance.

Being a Musician Right Now - w/ Neil Pearlman

Just about a year ago, all in-person gigs were cancelled due to the pandemic, leaving many musicians wondering how to adapt to this new reality. As time passed, artists came up with creative ways to stay connected and productive online.

To mark this approximate one-year milestone, we're co-hosting a discussion with Trad Cafe producer Neil Pearlman about what it's been like as a working musician over the last year.

Neil will be sitting down with New England fiddler and singer Lissa Schneckenburger, and Irish flute player and singer Shannon Heaton to talk about what they've done to stay busy and continue making music.

Suggested donation: $10

Proceeds are shared between the musicians and Ministry of Folk to support future programming!

Celtic Ornamentation for Mandolin Workshop with Eric McDonald

Eric McDonald has been playing traditional music on mandolin for 15 years. In this workshop he’ll share some of the tools he's developed, namely a set of ornaments well-suited for Irish, Scottish, Quebecois, Swedish and other traditional tune styles. He will methodically go through each of them and their technical application (with video examples). He will offer practice techniques for incorporating them naturally into your playing, and we’ll end with a bit of a group practice session. He's going to focus on tunes that were recorded on his 2017 album “Rove”, including but not necessarily limited to Munster Buttermilk (Jig in D), The Morningstar (Reel in G) and MacLeod's Farewell (Reel in D).

Effervescent and engaging, Boston-based fiddler Hanneke Cassel’s style fuses influences from the Isle of Skye and Cape Breton with Americana grooves and musical innovations, creating a cutting-edge acoustic sound that retains the integrity and spirit of the Scottish tradition. While Cassel has established herself as a leader in the contemporary Scottish fiddle scene, this year she embarked on a project with guitarist Yann Falquet to record the traditional tunes that inspired her love for Scottish music. Falquet, who has toured regularly throughout Canada, the U.S., Europe and Australia with Québécois band Genticorum, is a driving, captivating musician who helps breathe life into these old reels, strathspeys, jigs, and airs. The Cassel/Falquet duo show features mostly these tunes from the new album, Over the Sea to Skye.

Brittany Haas & Bruce Molsky

Brittany Haas is joining Bruce for a joyful evening of old-time music. The event will crackle with heart-thumpingly gorgeous songs that bridge Molsky’s and Haas’ respective generations with the community—past, present, and future—who carries this musical tradition forward over the centuries.

Both Molsky and Haas are revered for their old-time fiddling, a musical tradition which comes from the southern Appalachian mountains. The concert will find the two friends trading old-time works that have stood the test of time, laughing over memories, and delighting in the joy of how this rich musical heritage continues to grow. Historically played for dances, these social songs gather people together using a structure in which musicians perform the melody together.
