I grew up in Eastern KY in the 1970s, and I learned directly to play fiddle from many oldtimers with roots in the nineteenth century. I did not choose to do “the oldtime music thing.” This music chose me. This is the music of my friends and family. I can help ground students in the real techniques of playing authentic eastern Kentucky mountain fiddling, and pass along fiddling lore acquired first-hand from my childhood experiences. My fiddling primary mentor was JP Fraley with whom I played with for many years. My grandfather was Hobart Stallard (1895-1996) whose music I play tribute to on my June Appal Recordings album _Hobe_ which was produced by Chance McCoy of Old Crow Medicine Show. I was a college professor for 18 years and now recently retired from academia.
